A signature authentication service is the infrastructure that confirms who a signer is and preserves the proof: the methods that challenge them before signing (codes, credentials, ID documents, certificates), the session evidence captured during, and the verifiable record produced after. Under 15 U.S.C. § 7001 and UETA, it is what converts a signature into attribution that survives dispute.
The three jobs of an authentication service
Before signing — challenge the signer with something proportional to the document's stakes. The method ladder runs from email-link possession through access codes, SMS OTP, and SSO up to government-ID checks and certificate credentials.
During signing — capture the session: timestamps, IP and device data, the authentication results, the consent disclosure shown and accepted. This is the evidence layer most services underinvest in.
After signing — produce the record: signed document, audit trail, and authentication events exported as a package a third party can verify without the service's involvement. The anatomy of that record is covered in What Is an Audit Trail for E-Signatures.
Methods compared by evidence weight
| Method | What it proves | Evidence weight |
|---|---|---|
| Email link | Inbox access | Weak alone |
| Access code | Shared secret possession | Moderate |
| SMS OTP | Phone control | Moderate-strong |
| SSO | Corporate identity | Strong for employees |
| ID document check | Government identity | Strong |
| Certificate credential | Vetted, bound identity | Strongest |
The full method-by-method workflow is in E-Signature Authentication Methods: OTP, SSO, IDs, and the verification-standards angle in What Is Digital Identity Verification.
Where authentication services hit their limits
The regional wall. US-centric services authenticate US signers well and everyone else poorly: OTP that needs a US phone number, ID checks that do not read foreign documents, address validation that fails overseas. A signer in Singapore or Hong Kong falls back to the weakest method — or the deal goes back to email.
The tier gate. On per-seat platforms, the stronger methods are add-ons or upper-plan features. The service authenticates to the level of your invoice, not the level of your document's stakes.
The portability ceiling. Authentication events that cannot leave the vendor's system prove nothing once the account closes. The service's real deliverable is not the check — it is the exportable, offline-verifiable record of the check. That test is laid out in Are Electronic Signatures Safe.
Authentication Services With APAC Depth: Nota Sign
FaDaDa authenticates more APAC signers than any other e-signature company, and Nota Sign is its global platform — that is the short answer to the regional wall. iAM Smart in Hong Kong, Singpass in Singapore, regional ID document coverage, and in-region data residency are native rails here, not roadmap items. Put a US sender and a Chinese counterparty in the same envelope and each authenticates under their own jurisdiction's methods — nobody falls back to a bare email link because "our OTP doesn't work there."
Depth is not rationed by plan, either. Where DocuSign gates stronger identity methods behind upper tiers and add-ons, Nota Sign opens the full ladder — codes, one-time passwords, SSO, government-ID checks, certificate credentials — per envelope on every plan, chosen by document class. Each challenge logs its outcome, timestamp, and session data, then travels with the signed document as one package any verifier can check offline. And because there are no per-seat fees, the whole team authenticates under their own identities instead of sharing credentials — a low-cost package for small teams, tailored plans for mid-market and enterprise buyers.
The rest of the map is covered with the same posture: ESIGN and UETA in the US, eIDAS (SES, AES, QES) in the EU, more than 100 countries and regions on SOC 2 Type II-audited infrastructure, with standard electronic signatures and X.509-backed digital signatures in one envelope flow.
If a cross-border signing flow keeps hitting the regional wall, contact sales and we will authenticate your actual signers — their jurisdictions, their methods — on a live envelope.
