Estonian ID Card

The Estonian ID Card is a government-issued smart card that enables secure digital authentication and legally binding electronic signatures.

Signing with the card's digital credentials

The Estonian ID card's chip holds credentials used for electronic identification and signatures. In Estonia, the card also supports access to services such as banking, medical records and tax administration. Signing a document uses the card's signing function, which has a different purpose from identifying yourself to enter an online service.

The card supports qualified electronic signatures under eIDAS. For a Nota Sign document, the relevant action is authorizing the signature with the card's credential as part of the configured signing method.

Prepare the reader and desktop software

Card-based signing requires a compatible card reader and desktop software. Prepare that setup on the device you will use for the document workflow, with the identity card available for the requested operations. Having the physical card with you is only part of the preparation: the electronic functions need the reader and software to work together.

This is a different setup from Estonian Mobile-ID, whose credentials are associated with a special mobile-operator SIM. Follow the instructions for the card method when your Nota Sign document specifies Estonian ID Card. The official e-Estonia ID-card overview explains the card's digital role and wider uses.

Approve the document in Nota Sign

Review the document in Nota Sign and complete its required fields. Proceed with the configured Estonian ID Card method, carry out the requested card-based authorization and finish the signing workflow in Nota Sign.

Identity authentication and document signing may appear within a wider transaction, but they serve separate purposes. Make sure the approval you complete relates to the document you have reviewed; using the card to identify yourself does not by itself complete the document task.
